About Excalidraw

Excalidraw is an open-source virtual whiteboard whose drawings look sketched by hand. It runs in the browser, supports real-time collaboration with end-to-end encryption, and stores drawings in an open file format; a paid tier, Excalidraw+, adds team features on top of the free tool.

The search data is one of the steadiest risers in the SaaS set: a yearly average of about 10 in 2022, 18 in 2023, 33 in 2024, 51 in 2025 and the low sixties so far in 2026. The highest week falls in July 2026, and unlike most of the names collected alongside it, interest over the latest quarter has held at the level of the quarter before.

The reason is that the hand-drawn look is a feature, not decoration. A rough sketch signals that a diagram is provisional, which invites discussion in a way a polished chart does not — useful for architecture diagrams, planning sessions and interviews. Being open source also means the editor is embedded in other products, so people meet it in many places and then search for the original.

The caution is the usual one for free tools: the curve measures how widely Excalidraw is used and recognised, not how many people pay for it. The relevant question for the business is how much of that attention converts to the paid tier, and the search data cannot answer it.
