About Kitten Heels

The kitten heel — a short, slender heel of roughly three to five centimetres — spent most of the last two decades as fashion shorthand for something safe and slightly dated. It was the shoe of the office compromise, and for a long time its main association was with an older customer who had given up on stilettos.

That reading no longer holds. The silhouette returned through the runways, with Victoria Beckham and JW Anderson among the labels putting it back into circulation, but the runway is the announcement rather than the cause. Two separate currents are doing the actual work.

The first is the continuing shift towards clothing that can be worn all day. A kitten heel gives the line of a heel without the cost of a stiletto, which places it in the same category as the flat-soled loafer and the low block heel — polish without penalty. The second is "quiet luxury", the move away from spectacle towards restraint. A heel that does not announce itself fits that mood almost by definition.

The more telling signal is demographic. This is not the traditional customer returning to a familiar shoe; it is a younger cohort adopting it for the first time, with no memory of its previous associations. Trends that move down an age bracket tend to have longer lives than trends that move up one, because the adopters have no prior version of the item to tire of.

The caveat worth keeping is that this has all happened quickly. The search data above shows a rise that only began in earnest around 2024 and has steepened since, which means the trend has not yet been through a full cycle of the fashion calendar. A five-year climb is a stronger foundation than a single spike, but it is not the same as a settled staple.
