About Volufiline

Volufiline is a cosmetic ingredient made by the French supplier Sederma from the roots of Anemarrhena asphodeloides, a plant used in Chinese herbal medicine. Its active compound, sarsasapogenin, is claimed to encourage fat cells in the skin to mature and store more lipid, adding volume — which is why it has been marketed on social media as "filler without needles".

The search data is almost flat until 2023, rises gently to a yearly average of about 22 in 2025, and then accelerates sharply: 2026 to date averages close to 60, with the highest week in June 2026.

The 2026 surge has two sources. TikTok creators spread the "needle-free filler" framing with before-and-after videos, to the point where people were buying the raw ingredient and mixing their own formulas. Then mass-market brands brought it to the shelf, with coverage of The Ordinary's Volufiline serum in June 2026 coinciding with the peak in searches.

The caution is substantial. Dermatologists have been markedly more measured than social media, and the research on sarsasapogenin comes largely from a different context — insulin resistance and metabolic disease — rather than from independent studies of topical cosmetic use. A trend driven by the word "filler" is a trend in the promise; whether the ingredient delivers it is a separate question the search data cannot settle.

Stock market exposure

Volufiline belongs to Croda International (LON: CRDA). It is a small part of a much larger company, so its search trend says little about the stock on its own. Volufiline is made by Sederma, part of Croda. All listed companies →
